RIYADH — The Ministry of Energy has revealed that Saudi Arabia has come first globally in the renewable energy production growth indicator in two years after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman launched the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI). The ministry highlighted the Kingdom's achievements after two years of SGI's launch, noting that Saudi Arabia advanced 10 places in the overall ranking of the Green Future Index. Moreover, it has come first in the Arab world and 20th globally in the CO2 emission growth indicator. The SGI has also resulted in the launch of 17 renewable energy projects with a capacity of 13.76 gigawatts to save about 23.1 million tons of CO2 equivalent annually. Saudi Arabia has launched the world's largest clean hydrogen production hub, which will reach a capacity of 250,000 tons annually by 2060. Additionally, the SGI has led to the launch of the first phase of the region's largest Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) hub in Jubail, with a capacity of 9 million tons annually, which will reach a maximum capacity of 44 million tons annually by 2035. The Crown Prince launched the Saudi Green Initiative, alongside the Middle East Green Initiative (MGI), in 2021, with the aim of enhancing Saudi Arabia's environmental action, in line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030.
