Haiti's President Jovenel Moise has been assassinated in a nighttime raid on his private residence in the hills above Port-au-Prince, the interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph announced Wednesday. A group of gunmen, some of whom allegedly spoke in Spanish, broke into Moise's home at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a statement from the prime minister published in full by local broadcaster Juno7. The 53-year-old was shot dead and the First Lady Martine was also injured in the attack, the interim PM wrote. He said that Haiti remained under the control of the police and armed forces and "all measures are taken to guarantee the continuity of the State and protect the Nation." A reporter for Le Nouvelliste and presenter on Radio Magik 9 Robenson Geffrard said the assassination was carried out by a commando group with "foreign elements," citing interim Prime Minister Joseph. — Agencies
