Diriyah Star Night painting showcases cultural depth of Saudi Arabia Inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night, Dutch artist Jeroen uses similar technique in his artwork
RIYADH — Legendary painter Vincent van Gogh's famous artwork Starry Night inspired his compatriot Jeroen van der Most, who works with the Van Gogh Institute team, to draw a unique piece showcasing the cultural depth of Saudi Arabia, especially after his visit to Diriyah. It took Jeroen about six months to draw this distinctive painting, using the same technique employed in the famous Starry Night painting. Jeroen named his artwork Diriyah Star Night, making it one of the most valuable pieces of art inspired by the work of Van Gogh. So far, the piece of art has been sold twice, the first in 2018, and a businessman from Saudi Arabia bought it for $2.5 million from artist Jeroen in Amsterdam, before it was even finished. Until a Saudi businesswoman bought it from a businessman for $3.2 million after the piece arrived in Riyadh. The Star Knight shield plate is now considered one of the most expensive pieces in the world, after the Star Knight plate, was reworked. "Before my visit to Saudi Arabia, I did not know that it has amazing natural and archaeological areas and other developed places. During my visit to the capital Riyadh, I was drawn to the historic area of Diriyah, where I wandered inside the mud houses. When I entered one of the mud houses, I looked out the window on the landscape and remembered the story of Van Gogh, who saw the city of Saint Remy in the early morning. And when he painted it, he imagined it as a starry night, and he painted the most famous artwork, the Starry Night," Jeroen said. "The story inspired me at the moment I stood in front of the window, and I decided to start drawing the Diriyah, imagining it appearing at night in a sky full of stars. And finally, I drew an artwork between what I saw and what Van Gogh saw in a different place and time but with the same sense of artwork," he added. Van Gogh whose drawings include some of the most famous, popular, and most expensive pieces in the world was one of the leading post-Impressionist painters. Widely regarded as Van Gogh's magnum opus, the Starry Night is one of the most recognized paintings in the Western art scene. Painted in June 1889, it has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941 after it was acquired from the Lillie P. Bliss Bequest. The painting depicts the view from a window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in France, just before sunrise, with the addition of an imaginary village.
