India crosses another milestone in the battle against the global pandemic with two million recoveries (20,37,870) on Wednesday. India saw its highest-ever single-day recoveries of 60,091 in the last 24 hours. "With this high number of COVID-19 patients recovering, and being discharged from the hospitals and home isolation (in case of mild and moderate cases), the recovery rate has scaled the twin peak of crossing 73% (73.64%). This has also led to the declining case fatality rate, which stands at a new low of 1.91% today," said the health ministry. The record-high recoveries have ensured that the actual caseload of the country viz. the active cases have reduced, and currently, comprises less than one fourth (only 24.45%) of total positive cases. The higher number of recoveries and the declining fatality rate has shown that India's graded strategy has worked. India has posted 13,61,356 more recoveries than the active cases (6,76,514). This, the government said, as a result of graded, preemptive and proactive response and management strategy for COVID-19 in the country and the push to test track and treat plan. Uttar Pradesh among worst virus-hit states The northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh — just behind Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka — has recorded 163,000 cases so far, with active cases at 50,242. According to state government data as of Wednesday, the death toll is at 2,585. Currently, Maharashtra is India's worst affected state with 615,000 cases and 20,687 deaths. Tamil Nadu has recorded 349,000 cases and 6,007 deaths; Andhra Pradesh 306,000 cases and 2,820 deaths; and Karnataka 240,000 cases and 4,201 deaths. In the last three weeks, Uttar Pradesh has seen its COVID-19 tally jump to double — from 81,463 cases on July 30. The number of fatalities has increased by about 66 percent — from 1,587 deaths. According to the government, the number of cases has gone up because the testing has increased significantly. — Agencies
