The United States recorded over 73,000 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours whereas Brazil reported almost 56,000 new cases. More than 15.8 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 638,271 have died from COVID-19, according to a Reuters tally, published on Saturday. Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019. According to the Johns Hopkins University, the US recorded 73,715 new cases and registered 1,130 deaths in the same period. The tally showed that the total confirmed cases in the nation reached 4,112,531 and 145,546 deaths. In Brazil, the Health Ministry reported 55,891 new coronavirus cases and 1.156 new deaths bringing the country's total cases to over 2.343,366 million and 85,238 deaths. The US and Brazil rank first and second globally in the coronavirus cases and deaths. In New Delhi, Indian health authorities said on Saturday that 757 people had died in the last 24 hours due to COVID-19 and 48,916 new cases were registered across the country. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said in its latest update that the death toll due to coronavirus infection so far in the country rose to 31,358 cases while the overall positive cases jumped to 1.3 million. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, New Delhi, Telangana, Karnataka, Assam and Bihar are among the worst affected states. The government has asked people, governments and local authorities to take all necessary precautions, adding that guidelines in containment zones should be followed strictly. In Geneva, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health announced on Saturday that 148 coronavirus cases were registered over the past 24 hours. The ministry said in a statement from its headquarters in Bern that the total number of cases rose to 34,302, while the number of deaths has stabilized at 1,700. Simultaneously, 4,178 patients continue to receive treatment at hospitals with over 758,000 tests conducted since February, in which 5.4 percent tested positive. Switzerland has witnessed an upswing in the number of cases after loosening most restrictions, prompting authorities to restrict entry of travelers from countries deemed "unsafe." In Moscow, Russia on Saturday reported 5,871 new coronavirus cases and 146 more deaths from the respiratory disease. The nationwide tally of infections has risen to 806,720, Russia's coronavirus crisis response center said. The death toll now stands at 13,192, and 597,140 people have recovered. Meanwhile, Chinese authorities announced 34 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours with no deaths being reported. The new cases raised the total number to 83,784 and deaths at 4,634 in China, Xinhua news agency quoted China's national health committee as saying on Saturday. It noted that no new cases were recorded in Beijing for the 19th day in a row as well as no recorded cases in Hubei province and its capital Wuhan, the center of the virus outbreak. It added that 16 people were discharged from hospitals, raising the number of recoveries to 78,889, while 261 patients are sill under medical care. In Jakarta, Indonesia reported 1,868 new coronavirus infections on Saturday, bringing the total to 97,286, data from the country's COVID-19 task force showed.
