JEDDAH — The Jeddah chapter of Aligarh Muslim University Alumni (AMU Alumni) recently organized a reception in honor of Safdar H. Khan, chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC), and Mumtaz Ahmad, former director general of police in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The gathering was attended by more than hundred intellectuals of different fields, including prominent Aligarians. Farzan Rizvi, president of the AMU Alumni praised Khan's continuous efforts toward progress and upliftment of minorities in general and Muslims in particular. Khan explained about the role and responsibilities of Minorities Commission, Delhi and steps taken during his tenure like releasing of prisoners held for petty offenses, girls' education, appointment of Urdu teachers, survey of Muslim girls and reimbursement of tuition fee. He also assured the community that he will do everything possible in his capacity to assist the non-resident Indians (NRIs). Khan also briefed the audience about the general awareness program undertaken by the commission that will help the minorities in the long run. Ahmad shared his thoughts and experiences of his 34 years of services in the police force and advised Muslims to come forward and join the police force. He intends to participate actively for upliftment of weaker section of the society. Khan and Ahmad entertained questions from the audience and provided them with information about DMC and India Islamic Cultural Center (IICC). The honorable guests were welcomed by Khurram Ilyas, Nooruddin Khan and Imran Ansari with mementos and bouquet of flowers.
