Okaz/Saudi Gazette MAKKAH — The Criminal Court here will decide on Wednesday the value of the compensation to be paid to Salma Al-Sharif, a Saudi woman whose car was burnt down by two young men in front of her home in Jammoum District. Kamal Al-Sharif, her lawyer, said Salma has demanded to be paid SR1 million for the damage to her car but the judge considered the value of the compensation to be too high. The lawyer said the judge ordered establishment of a committee of experts to estimate the value of the damages and acquitted the two young men for lack of sufficient evidence. Court sources said the plaintiff was firmly holding to her demand of a million riyals. The Court of Appeals in Makkah refused the verdict issued by the Criminal Court and referred back the case to it. It said it was not convinced by the verdict including the acquittal of the two suspects and asked the Criminal Court to condemn them objecting to their acquittal. The discretionary circuit of the Criminal Court had sentenced one of the suspects to three months imprisonment for acquiring "banned substance" and said the prison term should be deducted from the time he has already spent in jail pending investigations.
