Okaz/Saudi Gazette Riyadh — The Public Prosecution is carrying out an integrated project to deal with the cases of guardianship abuse in preparation to refer it to the higher authorities, according to the Attorney General Sheikh Saud Al-Moajab. The Public Prosecution will spare no efforts in protecting individuals whether women, children, parents from unfair treatment by those who abuse guardianship powers, Al-Moajab said at the conclusion of a workshop that dealt with the issue of guardianship abuse in Riyadh on Sunday. The Public Prosecution has the power to file criminal cases against those who commit such abuses. The aim of the workshop was to put curbs on the people who abuse their guardianship powers. Al-Moajab, however, said only a few complaints have been received about guardianship power abuse. This is not widespread, he said. The workshop discussed the definition of guardianship, the responsibilities and powers of a guardian according to Shariah, forms of abuse of guardianship powers and their social and psychological impact, criminal accountability of the abuser, mechanisms for filing criminal cases, filing lawsuits against those who unjustly prevent women from getting married and their rights granted by Shariah.
