Australian teenager Stephanie Rice broke her second world record in three days at the national Olympic trials on Tuesday. The 19-year-old added the 200 meters individual medley record to the 400m mark she claimed on Saturday when she stopped the clock at two minutes 08.92 seconds. Her time slashed 0.80 off the previous record of 2:09.72, set by China's Wu Yanyan at Shanghai in 1997. Rice's boyfriend Eamon Sullivan almost made it a lover's double on Tuesday when he swam the second fastest 100m freestyle on record, just 0.05 outside Alain Bernard's world mark set at the European championships at the weekend. Sullivan, won his 50m freestyle semifinal in 47.55 to serve notice of his plans to sink the Frenchman in Beijing. Marleen Veldhuis started the world record rush with her Dutch teammates, slicing a substantial 1.6 seconds from Germany's women's 4x100 freestyle relay mark, and trimmed 0.04 seconds from Inge de Bruijn's 50 freestyle record with a time of 24.09. Italy's Federica Pellegrini, disqualified for a false start in the 200 freestyle heats, provided the sixth world mark, turning on the pace in the second half of the 400m freestyle to win in 4:01.53 and grab the record from Olympic champion Laure Manaudou.
