Abdullah Abu Al-Samh Okaz newspaper Our country is in need of water to satisfy domestic consumption and agricultural and industrial demand. Being a desert country does not help matters but Allah has been kind enough to bless us with saline water that we take from the sea. Thanks to our infrastructure, we can desalinate this water and transport it to the most desolate of areas. Modern technology has also allowed us to extract non-renewable groundwater from fossil aquifers. We then foolishly used this water to irrigate crops and achieve food security without thinking what would happen when these aquifers are depleted. It is regrettable that our universities have not conducted any serious studies to preserve the Kingdom's water resources or even increase them by storing rainwater. Even our dams do not serve their purposes fully. However, the Prince Sultan Center for Environment, Water and Desert Research claims that it has carried out research and experiments to construct traps that will collect rainwater. Supervisor of the center Dr. Abdul Malik Al-Sheikh said in a recent statement that small-scale dams and pools have been constructed throughout the Kingdom to harvest rainwater. This is a commendable move, which, if successful, will help us achieve water security. Keep up the good work!
