The global warming phenomenon is one of the most controversial issues in the era of globalization. It has changed the world's agenda as scientists and other experts undertake research, make predictions and explore facts which may be inconvenient. It also has forced both developed and developing countries to encourage and support the concepts of green economy and green industry as major tools to achieve sustainable development. In addition, the world has become more interdependent, and in order to solve common problems and remove barriers among nations, international organizations, unions and agreements must play a critical role in global issues in both developing and developed countries. Moreover, individuals must work together in groups to curb the effects of global warming and let globalization work as it should. This vision can be achieved by recognizing the importance of green industry which “provides a clear set of immediate actionable strategies and approaches that can be utilized to build up and accelerate progress toward a green economy” as the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) states. The Saudi government believes that applying green economy strategies will help to achieve sustainable development, eliminate poverty and build a better future. Also, the new Saudi policy enhances and strengthens industrial competitiveness and economic diversification within the context of the world economy. The Saudi Industrial Property Authority (Modon) can play a significant role with regard to green industry. This can be done in two ways: First, Modon can encourage factories to use resources more efficiently and to make use of renewable energy sources in order to reduce environmental harm. Second, it can help create green industry by encouraging factories and investors to produce green goods and services, such as recycled products and wastewater treatment. These two dimensions are the key drivers to the creation of a green economy and industry. In Saudi Arabia we can also embrace the “Green Industry Initiative” that UNIDO has announced, which aims to accelerate the growth of green manufacturing and related sectors. This kind of initiative will lead us to achieve the sustainable development that we need in our region. It will also enable us to increase competitiveness, open new markets, develop new business ventures and reduce production costs for our factories. We should also provide new environmental solutions to minimize the danger of global warming, and we should adapt the use of renewable energy whether in our factories or in our communities, so that we can provide society with its daily needs without damage to the environment. — The writer can be reached at: [email protected]
