MAKKAH — A man in Makkah kicked his two sisters out of the family home and forced them to live in the Grand Mosque for the last two and a half years. Their father died 10 years ago and the brother was looking after them and their mother. Three years ago he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which is when the sisters' lives were turned upside down, a local newspaper reported on Monday. The sisters claimed that their brother began assaulting them with pipes and locked them in their room. He finally expelled them from the house and they could not find any other place to accommodate them but the Grand Mosque. They received SR700 a month from social insurance, but they would give their 75-year-old mother SR500 and live on the rest. They survived by eating cheap food and used public buses to run their errands. The older sister graduated from university three years ago, but has not been able to find work. The younger sister graduated this year. A source at the National Society for Human Rights' Makkah branch said the sisters have approached the society for help and they will be provided with support.
