Ahli, Nasr drop points in second round of GCC tourney
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 20 - 08 - 2008

The two Saudi teams participating in the 24th GCC Club Football Championship ended their second-round matches with goalless draws. While, Al-Ahli dropped points against Al-Najmah of Bahrain in a Group B at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium here, Al-Nasr drew goalless with Al-Muharraq of Bahrain in Doha in Group A.
Al-Ahli players failed to make use of the many chances they created. Led by Abdu Bakr Adam and Saleh Abdul Hameed, Al-Najmah defense shut out Al-Ahli players.
With this draw Al-Ahli toppped Group B with four points, while Al-Najmah gained its first point in the competition after it had lost to Dhafar of Oman 0-1.
However, with one point from two matches, Al-Nasr chances are dim to qualify to the next stage. The team missed Benin's Razak Omotoyossi, who was allowed to join his national team for a friendly match against Morocco in Porto Novo.
In the second match in Jeddah, Al-Salmiyah of Kuwait won over Dhafar 3-2.
Abdullah Al-Biraiki of Salmiyah put his team ahead in the 17th minute, but Hani Al-Dhabit of Dhafar equalized one minute later. In the 33rd minute, Dhafar was reduced to ten when its defender Fahd Bin Nasib was sent off. Though the Kuwaiti players tried to attack, just one minute before the first half ended, Dhabit scored for Dhafar.
Salmiyah kept on pressing and it earned a penalty kick in the 54th minute and Basher Abdullah converted. Four minutes later, Nawaf Al-Otaibi sealed the win for Al-Salmiyah.
On Sunday, Al-Muharraq of Bahrain won over Al-Nahdha of Oman 2-0 in Group A in Doha.
Reco put his team in the lead in the first half and in the 74th minute Abdullah Al-Dakheel sealed the win.
On Monday, Al-Qadsia of Kuwait thrashed host Al-Khor 5-0 through Badr Al-Muta'we (4) and Saleem Achour.
Al-Raed shines in Abha
In the International Elite Competition in Abha, Al-Raed of Saudi Arabia prevailed over Al-Ittihad, 7-6, via shootout, after the teams drew 2-2 at the end of the regulation time at the Prince Sultan Stadium.
Majed Al-Muwallad, opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Talal Al-Misha'al of Al-Ittihad headed Saleh Al-Ghuanim's cross into the goal in the 29th minute. Basim Al-Shareif of Al-Raed then headed into Ittihad net just moments before the first half ended.
In the 57th minute, Noureddin Bukhari of Al-Ittihad was brought down in the box. And he converted from the spot to make it 2-2.
In another match, Moroccan Forces Armée Royales won over Al-Karamah of Syria 2-1.
Moroccans went one up in the 20th minute when Noureddin Qassimi headed in off a corner.
Al-Karamah equalized through Mohammed Oday in the 54th minute.
In the 80th minute, Jawad Waqoush of Armée Royales sealed the win.
Al-Raed of Saudi Arabia now is on top with five points. Al-Ittihad stays second with four points and Armée Royales third with three. The Syrian team is in the cellar with no points.
On Wednesday, Al-Raed meets Armée Royales and Ittihad plays Al-Karamah. __
