JEDDAH — The Jeddah General Court is due to issue its final verdict Tuesday in the case of an Egyptian lawyer arrested in Jeddah for smuggling narcotics into the Kingdom. Ahmad Al-Jizawi was apprehended last April at King Abdul Aziz International Airport. Another Egyptian man and a Saudi man were involved in the case as well and were charged with drugs smuggling in previous hearings. The court has held at least 12 hearings during which it looked into all evidence related to the case. In the last session, Al-Jizawi claimed that he was carrying a briefcase with scientific research papers worth billions of riyals and the briefcase was lost when he entered Jeddah. The prosecution told the court that customs officers confiscated three suitcases Al-Jizawi was carrying when he was arrested. Al-Jizawi's wife might have been the one who was carrying the briefcase or his statement about the briefcase was false, the prosecution told the judge. The prosecutor demanded that Al-Jizawi declare what was in the case before the court to prove his claim was true. He said there was a possibility that the research papers could be related to terrorism. The second defendant, the Egyptian man, had confessed previously that he implicated the Saudi man, who was his employer, in the case to get revenge. He said the Saudi reported him to authorities in Riyadh and later in Jeddah and as a result he was jailed. In the last hearing, the presiding judge adjourned the hearings to consider the case and hand down a final verdict.
