JEDDAH — The King Fahad Road, better known as Sitteen Street, is a major traffic artery in Jeddah, running through a variety of markets and other facilities. The southern end of the street runs through “Yemeni Market.” It is a market where everything is available. Close by, “Al-Ittihad Market” specializes in the sale of furniture and electrical equipment. Many of the workers there do not have the required licenses to operate. A small auction market exists within “Al-Ittihad Market” that sells stolen items. Sellers of bootleg films and music recordings are evident everywhere. In the nearby “Al-Kandarah Market” sewage water continually over flows, eroding the streets. Along Sitten Street lies Enaikish neighborhood, where African nationals, of whom most are residency violators, take residence and have their own shops. Further to the north lies a very important government body, namely, The Jeddah Court. A short distance further is a furniture complex, and Erfan Hospital. Cafes, workshops, and the industrial area complete the Sitteen Street attractions. The head of the Consumer Protection Association, Dr. Naser Al-Tuwaim, said that the association's role is monitoring and reporting offenses to the concerned bodies. Jeddah municipality spokesman, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Nahari, said that the municipality is closing illegal shops and activities. Residency violators, however, are the responsibility of the passport office, he added. He pointed out that plans for the new industrial area in Asfan are nearing completion. All workshops will be relocated to the new area.
