Desperate to become a comedian, he told jokes for tips on the Chicago subway and performed at comedy clubs, many of them off the beaten track. In 1990, he won a national comedy contest. Small film roles followed and then he made the move to television and finally in 2001 starred in the “Bernie Mac Show,” which led to roles in major Hollywood films. __
