JEDDAH — Pedestrians who cross busy streets risk being run over, as pedestrians crosswalks are virtually non-existent. This problem has increased especially since traffic signals were removed from various streets to allow for free flowing of traffic. Such streets encourage drivers to speed, thus making it even more difficult and hazardous for pedestrians to cross them. Residents are demanding for crosswalks especially on main streets, like Al-Andalus and Prince Sultan streets that are bordered with stores, restaurants, and business on both sides. Col. Zaid Al-Hamzi of Jeddah Police said that the traffic police has communicated with the municipality to establish pedestrians crossings on streets where traffic signals were removed. Jeddah municipality spokesman, Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Nahari, said that the municipality has planned for 30 pedestrian bridges in next year's budget. He added that there is coordination with the traffic police to identify locations that are in need of such crossings.
