JEDDAH – Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah region, will formally open Jeddah's refurbished North Corniche seafront Tuesday evening. Several prominent figures, including Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs Prince Mansour Bin Miteb, Governor of Jeddah Prince Mishal Bin Majed, and Mayor of Jeddah Hani Aburas will attend the colorful ceremony. A large number of Jeddah residents are also expected to partake in the ceremony of launching the ambitious project, which is regarded as the largest single phase multi-recreational and entertainment facility in the Middle East region. The facelift project saw the building of a sandy beach, recreational places for children, separate paths for joggers, Wi-Fi services and new lampposts. Mayor Aburas said the project, one of the finest waterfronts in the world, has been completed at a total cost of SR180 million. Speaking to the Saudi Press Agency, he said the seafront project, the first of its kind in the Middle East region, is part of the mayoralty's strategy to overhaul urban development that includes the entire Corniche area. The Corniche renovation and beautification project was implemented under the supervision of the Jeddah Development & Urban Regeneration Company (JDURC), which was created as a right arm to the mayoralty to develop the city. Aburas said the mayoralty will award the project for beautification of the middle Corniche, as well as the Palestine street development project early next year. “The mayoralty is also striving to start developing the remaining part of the Corniche in the northern direction from Al-Nawras Square to Fatima Al-Zahra Mosque, and then the seafront in the Sharm Obhur region,” he said. The mayor noted that Jeddah Mayoralty won the Civil Development Project of the Year Award for the development of the Jeddah Corniche at the prestigious Big Project Middle East awards held in Dubai on Dec. 4. –SG
