JEDDAH – The seashores here are littered with old abandoned ships. Local believe that the ships originally belonged to the Greeks who visited Jeddah 25 years ago. The dilapidated, rickety ships have become a safe haven for strangers and warehouse for local vendors. The latter conveniently stock rotten vegetables and dry fishes to be later sold in the the fish market. Some vendors, who now posses the ships, told Okaz/Saudi Gazette that children of some original owners are now wealthy businessmen. Media spokesman of the coast guard, Saleh Al-Shehri, said that these ships are not their responsibility. Okaz/ Saudi Gazette tried to contact Jeddah municipality to know more about the abandoned ships and the people living there – but no response was received.
