Chevrolet Speed Star Championship final round Wednesday
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 25 - 03 - 2008

day final round of the Chevrolet Speed Star Championship series roars off at Durat Al-Arous Wednesday.
Abdullah Bakhashab Establishment, organizers of motorsport development in the Kingdom, finalized the preparations for the competition.
In each round the participants will display their drifting style and technique on a twisting track of 1.50 km specifically designed for the championship. The races will be judged on time, and drivers will accumulate points from each round with the title awarded to the driver with the most points. The official car will be Lumina SS for its great power and high flexibility on the track.
As with other Chevrolet Motorsport events in the region, accessibility to the competition is a major focus.
To enter the Speed Star Championship a rear wheel or all wheel drive car and the desire to compete are the only requirements.
The results through collecting points will be as follows: 20 points for first position, 15 for the second, 12 for the third, 10 for the fourth, 8 for the fifth, 6 for the sixth, 4 for the seventh and 2 for the eighthth.
There will be prize money for the winners: SR10,000 for the first pace, SR6,000 for the second and SR3,000 for the third.
The race will begin after grouping the participants according to their vehicles into four classes based on the capacity of the engine, its power and its production year.
The vehicles were standard six cylinders, modified six cylinders, modified eight cylinders and standard eight cylinders.
After the technical test on the first day, every participant will make a free tour through the track. The drivers then will have two trials to collect the best time.
For the first time in the history of races in the Kingdom the organizers hand the public a chance to vote for the best show driver in this event. A form will be distributed to the public during their entrance to the place specified for them.
After collecting forms, organizers will announce the best show driver giving him a chance to make his show in front of the public who voted for him.
First round
Sayeed Al-Moori won the 1st round of Chevrolet Speed Star competition held at Durat Al Arous in north Jeddah recently.
In his V6 BMW Z3 car, he led the podium winners clocking the best time of 01: 41:770 on the second day.
Al-Moori, a phenomenon in motor sport, charged through the grueling qualification process and emerged winner on the first day and stayed on the top in the round.
Majed Al Ghamdi came second clocking 01:50:905 driving his red standard 8 cylinder Lumina SS. Eyeed Al-Najjar failed to stay in third position having surrendered it to Bandar Al-Sylami on his standard 6 cylinder Lumina SS clocking 01:51:046.
Second round
Sayeed Al-Moori again trounced the field in the Chevrolet Speed Star competition second round in his car V6 BMW Z3. He led the podium winners clocking the best time of 00: 51:670 on the second day.
Nael Bedair, who claimed second place, clocked 0:56:846 driving his red standard 6 cylinders Nissan Z. Abdulaziz Al-Yaeesh, Universal motorsport agency driver, on his standard 6 cylinders Lumina S managed third (01:51:046).
Drifting is a high skill, high powered motorsport that calls for drivers to control a car while it slides at high speeds through a marked course.
It is similar to rally racing, but is done on a closed paved course. It is judged on execution and style rather than just who finishes the course the fastest, similar to skateboarding and freestyle motocross.
The sport caters well to spectators and is exciting to watch. 2007 was the first year of the Chevrolet Speed Star series - the first national championship series in the Kingdom.
Over the past year, Chevrolet Motorsport has demonstrated its commitment to developing grassroots motor sports in the region, by sponsoring competitions in drag racing, drifting, tat'ees, and track racing.
With the new Chevrolet Speed Star Championship, Motorsport has successfully implemented the vision articulated last year, and has elevated local motor sports in the region to higher degrees of safety and excitement. __
