Interior ministry says 990 a success
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 14 - 08 - 2008

The Ministry of Interior reported the success of people becoming aware of deviant behavior and reporting it to the authorities. In a statement released Wednesday an official source described several incidents of people using the emergency service number 990 to find help in desperate situations.
A citizen from Rabigh called 990 and turned himself in after he said he had developed ideas, which could have compelled him to become a danger to society.
A team of Shariah experts and psychologists were assigned to treat him with cooperation from his family.
Three citizens reported the disappearance of their sons who were reportedly going to take part in terrorist activities. Police managed to find the men minutes prior to their departure at a local airport.
With the cooperation of families security authorities were able to not only find the men but also pinpoint who had convinced them to become terrorists.
A man reported the disappearance of his son last year after he entered the Kingdom using forged documents. He said his son had used his other son's passport to leave the Kingdom and was asked to commit terrorist acts. The boy refused and was held by the group until he managed to escape.
The boy reported that his condition had worsened so he wanted to return home to seek treatment. When he returned home he sought treatment with the help of his family.
A woman contacted a religious scholar about her husband's disappearance after he expressed a desire to commit jihad. The scholar contacted security authorities who helped return him to the Kingdom. The man expressed his regret for his false ideologies and has been reunited with his family.
He will face a rehabilitation program with the help of his family.
Here is a sample of a call made to 990 by a man claiming he was being recruited as a terrorist.
Caller : Hello
990: Yes, go ahead.
Caller : Assalam Alaikum.
990 : Welcome.
Caller: I am calling to say I am involved in a security case and I want to turn myself in.
990 : Where are you calling from?
Caller : From Jeddah.
990 : What's the case?
Caller : I am looking for the intelligence building in Jeddah but I cannot find it.
990: What's the problem?
Caller : My problem is the Internet.
990 : The Internet?
Caller : I am involved with someone (from a terrorist website).
990 : You can't find the intelligence building?
Caller : No I could not find it.
990 : Where are you exactly? In which district?
Caller : You tell me where you want me to go.
990 : You said you want to go to the intelligence building.
Caller : Yes I want to turn myself in so if anything happens to the documents I have or to me you would be aware of it.
990 : I want to know the street where you are now that we can reach you.
Caller : I am on Mohammad Bin Abdul Aziz Street, Al-Tahliyah.
990 : ok
Caller : I am behind Al-Mansour wedding hall exactly after the traffic signal when you head to the western direction.
990 : Beside Al-Mansour wedding hall . .
990 : I am glad you called.
Caller : May God help you. __
