Residents of the German capital Berlin woke up to find their city divided with fences of barbed wire, which were replaced later by concrete blocks that became the Berlin Wall. The wall became a symbol of the so-called Iron Curtain, or countries of the Soviet Bloc, and separated Communist East Berlin from Federal West Berlin for decades. __
