RIYADH — The National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) has demanded the death penalty for a father accused of physically abusing Luma, a five-year-old girl who died of injuries sustained during the assault. Dr. Khalid Al-Fakhri, the NSHR supervisor in the region, said the crime was one of the most heinous he had come across. The NSHR had previously contacted the concerned authorities eight months ago asking them to interfere to stop the abuse. Luma died a few days ago at Shumaisy Hospital in Riyadh. She was admitted to the hospital in an unconscious state last May. She had suffered internal bleeding due to skull fracture in addition to multiple injuries on her bodies. She sustained the injuries as her father hit her repeatedly in an attempt to discipline her, the girl's mother said. She accused her ex-husband and his current wife of treating her daughter badly.
