Muhammad Dawood Okaz/Saudi Gazette JEDDAH — A large white sewage stain that has appeared on the Red sea in the Northern Corniche area in Jeddah has alarmed local residents. The stain is believed to be a sewage that has discharged into the sea. Local residents called on authorities to do something about this problem and move the pipes that discharge sewage into the sea to a remote place. They fear the humidity and high temperature will make the area infested with mosquitoes and other insects and cause widespread bad smell. One of the residents said sewage pipes that discharge waste into the water threaten the environment, put off tourists and pose a health risk. Another resident said this sewage also affects marine life and kills a lot of animals. It makes the beach look dirty and unclean, he added. Dr. Abdul Rahman Kamas, environmental expert, believes sewage water that flows into the sea causes huge health problems because the bacteria inside react to oxygen. He urged authorities to address this problem as soon as possible to avoid any major environmental damage.
