WELLINGTON — The New Zealand Rugby Union says player Hoani MacDonald has emerged from an induced coma after suffering a heart attack while playing in a national provincial championship match. MacDonald, who has played for the New Zealand Maori and Junior All Blacks teams and in the Super 15 for the Otago Highlanders and Melbourne Rebels, collapsed during the first half of the match between Southland and Counties Manukau Saturday. Paramedics who treated MacDonald said his heart twice stopped beating as they and the Southland team doctor worked frantically to save his life. — AP
