Eat a ‘rainbow' to stay healthy
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 11 - 10 - 2012

Saudi Gazette Sometimes learning about how to eat right can be a little complicated for kids your age and let's be honest; it can even be a little boring. But what if I told you that to be healthy, strong, and energetic, all you need to do is eat a rainbow? Make sure that within one day, you chose foods to eat of every color of the rainbow and you automatically gave your body all the vitamins and minerals it needs. Eating colorful foods is fun, easy, and magical.
Scientists believe that natural plants have captured energy from the sunlight and stored it for us to benefit from. So every time you eat a fresh fruit, or munch on a bright vegetable, you are getting the vitamins, minerals, water, and sunlight energy as well. By choosing foods from a wide range of colors you make sure that your body is receiving a wider range of nutrients.
The natural, fresh, colorful fruits and vegetables help your body in a lot of ways: they are low in calories so they do not cause weight gain, they are high in water which is essential, they contain plenty of vitamins, minerals, and fiber, they can fight against cancer, and they make your immune system stronger.
Let's taste the magical rainbow; one color at a time.
RED: These foods keep muscles flexible, enrich the blood, strengthen the heart, help improve your memory, and protect against cancer. Tasty foods include strawberries, raspberries, red grapes and apples, tomatoes, and pink grapefruit.
ORANGE: Again the vitamins in these foods can help keep cancer away, improve vision, and keep your eyes healthy. Yummy items to consume could be carrots, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes, apricots, peaches, oranges, and tangerines.
YELLOW: These fruits contain a lot of vitamin C, which means it makes your immune system stronger so that you get sick less often. Good examples are: oranges and tangerines again, lemons, bananas, mangoes, and pineapple.
GREEN: Green vegetables are good for your bones and teeth, and since they contain iron they give you more energy. Greens to eat more of are lettuce, watercress, parsley, spinach, and broccoli.
BLUE/PURPLE: These delicious foods are good for your eyes, heart, and blood. So, snack on plums, blueberries, blackberries, dark grapes, and cherries.
After eating a rainbow each day, the pot of gold you will find at the end of your rainbow is good health, an active life, and powerful mind!
