SHANGHAI — Seventh-seeded Juan Monaco was upset by fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-2 Tuesday in the second round of the Shanghai Masters. The 23rd-ranked Verdasco broke his opponent three times and hold serve throughout the match. “I think I played a great match from the beginning until the end,” Verdasco said. “I knew how I was supposed to play to beat him and I think I did it pretty well,” he added. Earlier, eighth-seeded American John Isner saved three match points in the third-set tiebreaker before outlasting Kevin Anderson of South Africa 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 7-6 (7). In a match where neither play dropped his serve, Isner hit 24 aces while Anderson had 21. “The quality was good as far as serving goes,” said Isner, who wasted a match point in the second-set tiebreaker. Kei Nishikori, who is coming off a win at home at the Tokyo Open last week, had little trouble securing a 6-2, 6-4 first-round win over wild-card entry Wu Di of China. “Obviously, it's not easy thing to play after winning the tournament,” said the 15th-ranked Nishikori. “You want to rest. Zheng beats Sanchez In Osaka, second-seeded Zheng Jie of China advanced to the second round of the Japan Open Tuesday with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 win over Maria Jose Martina Sanchez of Spain. Zheng broke her opponent three times in the final set to wrap up the win in 2 hours, 43 minutes at the Utsubo Tennis Center and will face France's Pauline Parmentier in the second round. Arvidsson ousts Safarova In Austria, Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden rallied to defeat fourth-seeded Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 Monday in the opening round of the Generali Ladies. Arvidsson failed to serve out the match at 5-3, but broke the 18th-ranked Safarova again at 6-5 in the indoor hard-court event. The Swede will face another Czech, Lucie Hradecka, who beat Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain 6-3, 7-6 (5).
