Systematic killing of Saudis in Iraqi prisons should stop
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 10 - 2012

Khalf Al-harbi
Okaz newspaper

I don't want to lie to myself or want anyone to say or claim that the Saudis detained in Iraq, most of them teenagers, went to Iraq for tourism purposes.
Generally they traveled to Iraq to carry out terrorist operations after being brainwashed by suspicious and deviant groups.
But this can never justify the barbaric and savage treatment they face in Iraqi detention centers: Injecting them with acid, strangling them to death or throwing them down from huge heights.
This shows all types of torture methods are acceptable.
I need to mention that terrorists should not be treated with equal barbarism, especially in the case of the Iraqi government which aims to follow the example of American democracy.
Iraq should have treated those detainees according to international conventions and norms that ensure them at least the right to defend themselves in courts.
The Saudi government had been exerting strenuous efforts throughout the past to prevent Saudis from leaving for Iraq to join jihadi groups. The Americans who were occupying Iraq and the Iraqi government that came after the occupation have time and again acknowledge these efforts.
No one was able to break the Saudi security barrier except some of those who were smuggled into Iraq by intelligence officials of Bashar Al-Assad, the ally of Nuri Al-Maliki, via the Iraqi Syrian borders.
But for the strict Saudi security measures and tight control over all border crossings with Iraq, explosions and destructive operations would have been on a much larger scale.
Does the Kingdom deserve to be rewarded through the revenge inflicted on these detainees, using measures contravening the simplest human rights principles?
Ironically, most of the Saudi detainees were sentenced to death. Thus the torture and interrogation operations are unjustifiable.
These malpractices represent substantial and quantifiable evidence for sick hidden envy, which is unacceptable from security bodies in a sisterly country.
In the long run the only one who will suffer from the savage and barbaric torture practiced against the detainees is the Iraqi government; the Iraqi courts will lose credibility and value.
Its minister of human rights will turn out to be evidence of the comedy of democracy in new Iraq.
What is weird is that detainees in Al-Maliki's jails who are accused of their affiliation to terrorist organizations are also from other nationalities, but we never read or hear any report about them being tortured or killed with acid injections.
This provides tangible and concrete evidence that these flagrant violations of human rights are practiced with the blessings of parties in the Iraqi government who harbor great hatred for this country and its people by flexing their muscles against helpless young detainees who can't protect themselves from any harm.
We urge our Ministry of Interior to intensify its efforts to prevent these young men from throwing themselves into the fire of international conflicts that they have nothing to do with and chase those who brainwashed them. We also appeal to the Foreign Ministry to redouble its efforts to put an end to these crimes that are committed against our sons in Iraqi prisons and detention centers.
