Levante edges Valencia 1-0
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 08 - 10 - 2012

BARCELONA — Levante beat Valencia 1-0 in a city derby Sunday with Obafemi Martins' first-half goal keeping the Spanish club undefeated in four home games this season.
Valencia continues to struggle in the Spanish league, remaining winless in four away games.
On Saturday, 10-man Getafe collected its first away victory of the Spanish league season by winning 1-0 at nine-man Real Zaragoza thanks to midfielder Diego Castro's penalty.
Ndri Romaric left host Zaragoza a player down in the ninth minute when he was shown a direct red card for a knee-high, studs-first tackle on Mehdi Lacen. Zaragoza still managed to create more chances than Getafe until Alvaro Gonzalez was sent off in the second half for tripping Getafe forward Pedro Leon in front of goal. Castro scored the resulting penalty in the 69th minute despite goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez getting a touch on his low strike, and Getafe held on after Abdelaziz Barrada was sent off for a tackle on Jose Maria Martin in the 84th.
Also Saturday, Real Betis beat Real Sociedad 2-0 at home. Elsewhere, Oscar Gonzalez scored with a header in the 82nd minute for Valladolid to escape with a 1-1 home draw against 10-man Espanyol, while Rayo Vallecano netted twice in the first half to beat visiting Deportivo La Coruna 2-1. Celta Vigo beat Sevilla 2-0 on Friday.
Khlifa treble sinks Montpellier
Saber Khlifa of Tunisia scored a superb hat trick to earn Evian Thonon Gaillard a last-gasp win at Ligue 1 champion Montpellier whose poor start to the season continued in a 3-2 defeat Saturday.
Lille, champion in 2011, beat Ajaccio 2-0 at home to clinch its first league victory since its opening game, while substitute Gaetan Courtet scored two late goals as promoted Stade de Reims won 3-1 against Nice.
Former European Cup finalist Reims is fourth in Ligue 1 on 14 points, four behind leader Olympique Marseille which was to take on second-placed Paris St. Germain late Sunday. Evian is now 17th, but level on points with Montpellier, which can consider itself unlucky after it twice hit the bar.
Toifilou Maoulida also scored late to earn promoted-side Bastia a 3-2 win at home to Troyes.
The result moved Bastia up to 12th on 10 points, while Troyes stays bottom with just two points from its opening eight games.
Toulouse recovered from two goals down to draw at home to Valenciennes, while Stade Rennes won 1-0 at Sochaux to move up to 11th. —Agencies
