WEMBLEY, England — Rio Ferdinand has been overlooked as John Terry's replacement in the England squad, with uncapped center back Ryan Shawcross receiving just his second international call-up. Coach Roy Hodgson announced Thursday that Ferdinand was not in the squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland, a day after revealing to London Underground passengers that the 33-year-old Manchester United defender wasn't in his plans. Hodgson's options in central defense have been reduced after Terry quit England duty last month before he was found guilty by the Football Association of racially abusing Ferdinand's brother, Anton. Shawcross was called up by Fabio Capello for an England squad in 2010, but the Stoke captain didn't play. Celtic goalkeeper Fraser has been called up for the first time for the qualifiers later this month. Squad: Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster, Joe Hart, John Ruddy; Defenders: Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Kieran Gibbs, Phil Jagielka, Glen Johnson, Joleon Lescott, Ryan Shawcross, Kyle Walker; Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Steven Gerrard, Adam Johnson, Aaron Lennon, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott; Strikers: Andy Carroll, Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Welbeck. Nasri, Ben Arfa out France coach Didier Deschamps has overlooked Samir Nasri for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Spain, even though the Manchester City midfielder is available for selection again after serving a three-match ban. Nasri was banned for three matches by the French Football Federation for his behavior at the European Championship, where he aimed an expletive-laced tirade at a journalist after the defeat to Spain in the quarterfinals. Winger Hatem Ben Arfa was also left out, despite making a bright start to the season with Newcastle. Deschamps recalled central midfielder Lassana Diarra to compensate for the absence of midfielders Abou Diaby and Rio Mavuba, who both picked up injuries recently. France plays Japan in a friendly on Oct. 12 and plays the qualifier in Madrid four days later. Ronaldo to lead Portugal Portugal coach Paulo Bento unveiled his 23-man squad Thursday that will travel to Russia on Oct. 12 before returning to take on Northern Ireland on Oct. 16 in Porto, for the upcoming rounds of 2014 World Cup qualifiers. Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo leads Bento's team that is coming off victories over Luxembourg and Azerbaijan and takes on unbeaten Russia at the top of Group F. The one surprise sprung by the Portuguese handler was the inclusion of 24-year-old uncapped defender Luis Neto, while striker Eder keeps his place after impressing on his debut last September. — Agencies
