Tiki, which carried Thor Heyerdhal and five companions more than 4,000 miles, smashed into a reef in the Tuamotu Islands in the Pacific thus successfully demonstrating his theory that the first settlers of Polynesia were of South American origin. This voyage is described in the 1950 international bestseller “Kon Tiki.” __
