The state of the art air-conditioning plant is located 7 kilometers away from the Prophet's Mosque in Madinah and uses six turbines and seven cold water pumps to keep worshipers at the mosque cool. — Okaz photo Sami Maghamsi Okaz/Saudi Gazette MADINAH – The cool atmosphere in the Prophet's Mosque is provided by a cooling plant set on an area of 70,000 square meters. The plant, comprising of several buildings including an emergency power plant, is located 7 kilometers away from the mosque to prevent noise pollution near the holy site. The plant also boasts rain and waste water drainage, irrigation systems and a network of roads and green areas. The cooling machinery used in the plant consists of six turbines and seven cold water pumps. The latter supply water to the Holy Mosque via service tunnels leading to the basement of the Haram. All the electrical and mechanical systems — including the ventilation sytem — are controlled via sophisticated computers to ensure all worshippers are kept cool.
