Djokovic and Isner reach semis

TORONTO — Top-seeded Novak Djokovic advanced to the Rogers Cup semifinals, winning two matches Friday in the rain delayed tournament.
Djokovic, the defending champion in the hardcourt event, beat Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-4 in the afternoon in a third-round match that was originally scheduled for Thursday, then delayed by rain for 2-1/2 hours in the second set.
The second-ranked Serb returned to the court at night to beat Tommy Haas 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a quarterfinal that ended just before midnight.
Djokovic will face fellow Serb Janko Tipsarevic Saturday. The fifth-seeded Tipsarevic also had two wins on the day, beating No. 10 Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-4 in the third round, and topping Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
In the other quarterfinals, eighth-seeded John Isner knocked out Canadian Milos Raonic 7-6 (9), 6-4; and 14th-seeded Richard Gasquet edged No. 11 Mardy Fish 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
In their afternoon matches, France's Gasquet beat fourth-seed Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-2, Fish topped Juan Monaco 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Isner edged No. 12 Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-4. Raonic had progressed because of the injury withdrawal of top seed Andy Murray.
In the women's Rogers Cup at Montreal, top-ranked Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the tournament Friday because of a knee injury.
Azarenka, who had a first-round bye, was level at 3-3 in her second-round match against Tamira Paszek when it was suspended by rain Thursday night.
The 23-year-old Belarusian won two Olympic medals in London, taking gold in mixed doubles and bronze in singles.
“I hope it is a short-term thing, but I don't know,” Azarenka said. “I have to kind of stop and just take a little bit of time off because I absolutely had no rest for a long period of time.”
Azarenka said she'll skip the Western and Southern Open next week in Cincinnati. Getting ready for the final major of the year is her top priority, she said.
Russia's Maria Sharapova, ranked No. 2 in the world rankings, withdrew earlier from the tournament because of a virus. The Olympic silver medalist and French Open champion was the third seed Meanwhile, Lucie Safarova upset Samantha Stosur 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) to reach the quarterfinals. Caroline Wozniacki, the 2010 champion, defeated qualifier Kiki Bertens 7-5, 6-1.
Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak led American Christina McHale 7-6 (5), 5-2 when rain interrupted their third-round match in the Rogers Cup.
Wozniak is attempting to become the first Canadian to reach the quarterfinals in 20 years. Patricia Hy-Boulais was the last to do it, losing to Monica Seles in the quarterfinals in 1992.
Petra Kvitova dispatched Marion Bartoli 6-1, 6-1. Aleksandra Wozniak led American Christina McHale 7-6 (5), 5-2 when rain interrupted their third-round match. — Agencies
