Following surprise inspections by municipal officials, 266 furnished residential apartments in Jeddah will have their power disconnected for failing to meet municipal regulations. Surprise inspections by Jeddah Mayoralty officials found 266 of the 317 furnished residential apartments failed to have valid permits from the Ministry of Commerce, Civil Defense and the Jeddah Mayoralty. The buildings also failed to meet safety regulation, Al-Watan reported Wednesday. Governor of Jeddah, Prince Misha'l Bin Majed ordered the power to be disconnected from the apartments as well as having the buildings sealed off until they meet the required standards. Muhammed Ajaj, assistant deputy mayor for safety and government relations said field inspectors make surprise visits to ensure landlords have permits from the relevant authorities. The inspectors check if safety standards are being met such as visible fire extinguishers, emergency exits and enough parking for fire fighting equipment outside the building. Ajaj said the buildings have been sealed off and the 52 landlords are in contact with municipal authorities to have their buildings reopened.
