Earthquakes hold Swansea City
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 02 - 08 - 2012

SANTA CLARA, California — Steven Lenhart scored twice in the final 11 minutes to help the MLS-leading San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw against English Premier League side Swansea City in a friendly Tuesday.
The Swans, who had goals from Danny Graham and Chico in the 41st and 60th minutes, have a win, a draw and a loss on their preseason US tour.
Lenhart, a second-half substitute, crashed home a beautiful square pass from Shea Salinas to bring San Jose back within a goal in the 79th. Then he headed home a curling cross from Rafael Baca deep on the right wing to equalize in the 85th.
Graham, the Swans' leading scorer last season with 12 Premier League goals, took advantage of a botched back pass to give Swansea the lead just before halftime.
Graham scooped up a loose ball after an attempted back pass from San Jose defender Ramiro Corrales failed to connect with goalkeeper David Bingham. Graham rounded Bingham and easily slotted the ball home.
Chico, a Spanish center back signed by Swansea City earlier this month from Genoa, powered home a header in the 60th minute despite Bingham's efforts at the back post.
Leroy Lita had a couple of late chances for Swansea, but couldn't convert.
Arbeloa extends Real contract
Real Madrid's Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa has agreed to extend his contract by two years to the end of the 2015-16 season, the La Liga club said Wednesday.
“I am delighted that the club still has faith in me and I hope to be able to continue enjoying my playing career,” Arbeloa said on Real's website.
“Today's players have longer careers and I hope it's not my last contract extension with Real Madrid,” added the 29-year-old fullback.
Arbeloa, who was born in Spain coach Vicente del Bosque's home city of Salamanca, came through Real's youth academy before joining Deportivo Coruna and then Liverpool and returned to the Spanish capital in 2009.
He made his debut for Spain in March 2008 and turned in a solid performance at Euro 2012 to help the Iberian win a second straight European Championship to add to their World Cup triumph in 2010. — Agencies
