Islam does not allow extremism and it denounces such acts vehemently. In the matter of extremism, Muslims often quote factions like the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, etc. I think Muslims should refrain from quoting such factions as they do not belong to the Islamic way of life, and too much is said about them. Such talk makes them feel important with the result that they become bold. Let these groups live in isolation and do not pay any attention to them and they will die a natural death. Islam is the champion of moderation and even in performing any act of worship, Islam calls for moderation. Islam also exhorts us to show tolerance and kindness towards other religions and to live in harmony with others. Muslims should have tolerance towards other religions, but in this process they should not forget to follow Islamic teachings. It is only in this way that they can have a positive impact on others. Once a pagan of Makkah offered a suggestion to Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) saying that “one year you worship our idols and the next year we (pagans) will worship your Allah.” At this time, Surah Kafirun was revealed in which it was said thatthe ways of non-believers and Muslims are different. This shows that in the name of tolerance Muslims cannot compromise with their faith and Islamic teachings. So tolerance and kindness are excellent traits, but Muslims should not forget their faith and teachings in this process. Anees Lokhande, Al-Khobar
