Santos wins thriller vs. Chivas
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 31 - 07 - 2012

MEXICO CITY — Darwin Quintero scored a 90th minute goal to hand Santos Laguna a 1-0 win against Chivas Sunday and make it two wins in the first two games of Mexico's Apertura tournament for the current champion.
Toluca, Tigres and Leon are the only other teams with perfect records after two rounds of matches. Toluca beat Puebla 3-1 Sunday, Tigres won 2-1 against Atlante Saturday and Leon defeated Tijuana 4-0 Friday.
In other results this weekend, America defeated Jaguares 4-2, Atlas won 3-0 against Pachuca, Pumas defeated Queretaro 3-0, Cruz Azul overcame San Luis 2-1 and Morelia won 1-0 against Monterrey.
Quintero tapped into an empty net to give Santos the win after Christian Suarez was put through on goal and squared the ball into his path.
Chivas had two first half goals disallowed for fouls and dominated possession before halftime, but Santos Laguna looked dangerous on the counterattack. Chivas has now lost its opening two games of the season under new Dutch coach John Van't Schip. The club appointed Johan Cruyff as an advisor last February with the club struggling in the league last season.
Toluca maintained its winning start with two goals from Brazilian Lucas Silva. Silva opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Edinson Toloza equalized for Puebla 12 minutes later. Wilson Tiago put Toluca back in the lead just before halftime and Silva added the third in the 65th.
Tigres scored twice in the last 15 minutes to come from behind to beat Atlante. Lucas Lobos and Hugo Ayala got the goals after Esteban Paredes had put Atlante in front in the 51st.
Two goals from Carlos Pena helped Leon, which was promoted to the first division last season, to its victory. Luis Montes and Hernan Burbano scored the other goals in an easy win against Tijuana.
Ecuadorean international Christian Benitez scored America's first and last goal to secure victory.
Jaguares had taken the lead in the 32nd through Luis Gabriel Rey before Benitez equalized and Juan Carlos Medina put America ahead in the 49th. Leonardo Bedolla equalized in the 51st for Jaguares, but Antonio Lopez got the third for America in the 80th before Benitez scored his second late on.
