AL-QATIF – A husband filed a divorce case at Al-Qatif Court against his wife because she was addicted to hookah smoking and would not break the habit. The husband said his wife spent a major portion of her time each day smoking the water pipe and this had a negative impact on his health. They have been married for seven years and have two kids. Sheikh Muhammad Al-Jirani, the presiding judge, said things could not have been patched up between both spouses because the husband was insistent about his intent. He complained on how his wife would stay up into the middle of the night smoking non-stop. “This is the first time we see a husband files a divorce case of this type." Sheikh Al-Jirani advised married couples to respect each other's needs and steer clear of bad habits such as smoking. He expected that this case might encourage many wives to follow suit and file divorce cases against their husbands for similar reasons. — SG
