Saudi GazetteJEDDAH — The International Indian School Jeddah Alumni Association (IISJAA) held a food drive on the premises of the International Indian School Girl's Section in Jeddah.
Alumni, students and families donated dozens of food items including cooking oil, rice, milk, sugar, salt, juices, canned foods, pasta and dates.
“We are here to collect food items, then we will pack them according to the needs of the families and distribute them among the community," said Asim Zeeshan vice president of IISJAA.
“We will make packs that will include 10 food items each. This should be sufficient to last a family of 4-5 for a month."
Zeeshan said the food items should help families before the holy month of Ramadan begins.
“We will distribute these things through our contacts and in coordination with Jameet-ul–khair which is a government owned NGO that helps in the distribution of charity items. They will come and check the quality and quantity and will distribute the packs to needy people," he added.
The food drive, which began on Wednesday and will end on Friday, was in full swing as many people donated food items and volunteered their time to help out.
“This is our second food drive and since our charity work is gaining recognition, I hope more people will come out and donate items. Our goal is to collect more than we did last year," said Fatima, the IISJAA's secretary.
“We had a great response on the first day of the drive. We received good donations from our alumni and their relatives. We also got various phone calls and e-mails from people who committed to donating food," she added
