Saudi Gazette DAMMAM — The new landlord/tenant regulations which include payment of rent on a monthly basis to alleviate the burden on the tenant were met with objection by a number of investors and real estate owners in the Eastern Region. Some investors stated that their non-compliance with the new regulations was because of the large number of leased residential and commercial units owned by them requires increasing the working hours of personnel specialized in rent collection on a monthly basis, which they described as burdensome for them and for their employees. Some landlords raised rents by 10 percent in less than a month and said that they wanted to take advantage before the new rent control regulation are enforced. Landlords said that they prefer expatriate families as they take care of residential units better than Saudis do. Some also prefer to enter housing agreements with major companies to provide accommodation for their employees even if the rents collected are slightly lower than if they rented to individuals.
