Visiting London is most people's dream and what better a place to commence your visit than Greenwich. Situated in South London, The Royal Borough of Greenwich is immersed in history, allowing you to explore a World Heritage Site.
Host of the Olympics 2012, you can take yourself to an unforgettable picturesque journey from the past right up to the present in The Royal Borough of Greenwich.
With over 100 acres, Greenwich Park is one of the oldest enclosed parks in London. The stunning park is the ground where most of the history of Greenwich can be found. Take a walk along the winding paths which go through the fresh greenery to the Royal Observatory or walk across the park to get a glimpse of London while you reach the Queen's House.
It is a magnificent Royal House built around the 1600's; it has housed many royals including James l. The Queen's house radiates the significance of history which can be seen in the solid architectural design. The house is open for visitors who wish to see the fine art.
The Royal Observatory is originally the Flamsteed House, designed in 1675 by Sir Christopher Wren on the instructions of King Charles II. It was built because the king thought that astronomy and navigation were key to maritime, and home and keeper of TIME is the Greenwich Meridian (GMT) the world's time standard – 00 longitude.
Inside the wonderful historical Observatory is the largest refracting telescope of the UK. Visitors are able to stand on the Meridian Time Line and take memorable photographs of one of the world's most famous points. The experience of being there is memorable, perched at the peak of the park the Meridian Time Line honours visitors with the historical knowledge of passage of time.
Another place to discover Britain's breath-taking maritime history is Maritime Museum. The breathtaking naval pieces and intricate display of sea maps and plans will take you back in time to the voyages undertaken by the naval officers and enable you to envisage sea routes on salty waters.
Greenwich is situated on the banks of the River Thames and provides a wonderful opportunity to cruise and be part of the old and modern London, apart from strolling around in quirky and contemporary shops and places. For example, the Traditional Pie and Mash food place, the outdoor antique market, the bustling indoor market,an array of food places from all over the globe, the 02 Arena, with a choice of coffee shops and food places.
For entertainment there is a late night cinema, the Comedy Club and the Cutty Stark; and one cannot miss the ethereal Greenwich University. These are just some of the extraordinary places that you certainly will not find anywhere in the world.
Although Greenwich provides picturesque scenic beauty at all times of the year, the best season however to visit is the summer. It is sure to be a delight with lots of fun with family and friends.
You can either opt for one of the many food places to chill but colorful London Borough, or have a picnic at the park. You can sit near the rowing boats, watching people splash in the river, or play sports such as football, cricket, bicycle riding. Or perhaps you can take a walk in the park and absorb the beauty of the lush green grass, chirpy birds and otherS.
If you are unsure of what to eat whilst in Greenwich, walk over to the Trafalgar Road up to the Pavillion Tea house, where you will find plethora of coffee and teashops. There you will have an opportunity to sample some proper English culinary delights, such as freshly made patisseries, dainty cheesecakes and scones.
In the heart of Greenwich town, wander your way to the seafood restaurant – a really good option if you are not fond of meat. For all those who prefer meat over seafood, they can choose to dine at the Mexican-Desperados, Pizza Express, Gourmet Burger Kitchen or the Asian and Indian restaurants. The food shops are located close to one another and the aroma of each individual joint will leave your mouth watering.
There is also a market famous for qualitative food available in marvelous beach hut-style stalls that are laden with paella, olives and wraps, among many other delicacies. — SG
