Consul General Ali Al-Ashiri speaks at an event held to celebrate the victory of Mohamed Mursi in JeddahSamar Yahya Saudi Gazette JEDDAH — Egyptian expats celebrated the victory of Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's new president, at the Consulate General of Egypt in Jeddah recently. The ceremony began with the national anthem, followed by the recitation of the Holy Qur'an. On behalf of consulate members and the Egyptian community, Consul General Ali Al-Ashiri congratulated Mursi on his election win. He also wished him success in fulfilling the goals of the Egyptian revolution and its aim for liberation, social justice and respect for human dignity. He lauded the martyrs and people injured during the revolution, and hailed the role of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which ruled the country during the transition period. He also welcomed the attendees and thanked the Egyptian community, whose participation rate in the elections was 57 percent. Al-Ashiri expressed gratitude to King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Saudi authorities and various departments who played an important role in facilitating the election for Egyptian expats that took place in the Kingdom. Attendees sang patriotic songs and the youth waved Egyptian flags. Al-Ashiri's speech was followed by the showing of a documentary which covered the events from the revolt to the election results on June 29. The video encouraged attendees to cheer again with patriotic chants. The band “Egypt's Lover" belted out patriotic songs which added to the festive atmosphere. “I would like to thank everyone who participated in preparing for this celebration. I would also like to thank the Egyptian community, all Egyptian associations and Egypt's Lovers band, who all worked voluntarily out of their love for Egypt," concluded Al-Ashiri.
