Athletics complete sweep of Red Sox
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 06 - 07 - 2012

OAKLAND, Calif. — Jemile Weeks hit a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh following Coco Crisp's leadoff triple, and the Oakland Athletics completed a three-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox with a 3-2 win Wednesday.
Red Sox slugger David Ortiz hit his 400th career home run and scored on Adrian Gonzalez's sixth-inning single.
Grant Balfour (2-2) went 1 2-3 innings for the win as the A's (41-42) moved within one game of .500 for the first time since they were 22-23 on May 23. Lone A's All-Star Ryan Cook finished with a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save in 11 chances.
Indians 12, Angels 3: Derek Lowe won for the first time in more than a month and the Cleveland Indians beat the Los Angeles Angels 12-3 Wednesday.
Lowe (8-6) gave up three runs and 11 hits in six innings for his first win in six starts since June 1. The 39-year-old right-hander was 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in five outings between victories.
Yankees 4, Rays 3: Robinson Cano hit a two-run single during a three-run eighth.
Cano has driven in at least one run in a career-best eight consecutive games, helping the AL East leaders stop a nine-game road losing streak against the Rays.
Alex Rodriguez cut the Yankees' deficit to 3-2 when he drew a one-out bases-loaded walk, the fourth freebie issued by Kyle Farnsworth (0-1) in the eighth. Jake McGee replaced Farnsworth and allowed Cano's single that put New York up 4-3.
Carlos Pena hit a two-run shot off Boone Logan (3-0) as the Rays went up 3-1 in the seventh.
Orioles 4, Mariners 2: Chris Tillman gave up just two hits in 8 1-3 innings in first start of 2012 and Adam Jones hit his 20th home run of the season for Baltimore.
Jones' homer leading off the second inning came on a 2-0 pitch from Seattle starter Hector Noesi (2-11) and landed well back in the upper level seats. That was all Tillman needed, as the one-time Seattle prospect shut down his former organization after getting called up from the minors.
White Sox 5, Rangers 4: Kevin Youkilis hit a game-ending RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Chicago White Sox to a 5-4 win over the Texas Rangers.
In the 10th inning, Alejandro De Aza, who fouled a ball off his right knee during the at-bat, led off the inning with a walk against Rangers reliever Mike Adams (1-3) then stole second. On the ninth pitch, Youkilis ended the game with an RBI single to score De Aza and prompting the crowd to shout “Youuuuk!” for the player acquired in a trade from the Red Sox on June 24.
Tigers 5, Twins 1: Miguel Cabrera homered twice and Justin Verlander pitched his fifth complete game to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins.
In a game delayed two hours and 26 minutes by rain, Cabrera went 3-for-3, drove in three runs and scored three. He was intentionally walked in his other plate appearance as the Tigers ended Minnesota's five-game winning streak.
Blue Jays 4, Royals 1: Carlos Villanueva pitched six shutout innings and Yunel Escobar drove in two runs as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-1. — Agencies
