ARAR — Police briefly detained a 43-year-old woman for driving a car in Arar, north of Saudi Arabia. The woman was first spotted on a major intersection with another woman in the passenger seat. Police followed her until she parked in front of a local bank. She was detained and eventually released to the custody of her father. Women in the Kingdom's hinterlands often drive as families in rural areas generally do not have the financial resources to employ a professional driver. Many women also use vehicles to transport livestock and drive tanker trucks to ensure their villages have an adequate supply of water.
