Millwood, 5 relievers combine for no-hitter

SEATTLE — Kevin Millwood and five Seattle relievers combined on a no-hitter, the third in franchise history, and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0 Friday.
The no-hitter was the fourth in the majors this season, joining gems pitched by the Angels' Jered Weaver, the Mets' Johan Santana and White Sox right-hander Philip Humber, who threw a perfect game at Seattle in April.
But this one was clearly the least conventional.
Millwood was cruising through six innings, giving up just one walk. But while warming up for the seventh he felt a twinge in his groin and was pulled from the game. Five relievers combined to finish the no-hitter, capped by Tom Wilhelmsen retiring Andre Ethier on a routine grounder to end it.
Phillies 9, Orioles 6: Jim Thome doubled twice, legged out an infield hit and got his first RBI of the season, and Shane Victorino homered and drove in five runs as Philadelphia emphatically ended a season-worst six-game losing streak.
Mike Fontenot homered for the Phillies, who scored six runs in the second inning.
Chris Davis and J.J. Hardy homered for the Orioles, who lost for the ninth time in 12 games.
Pirates 4, Royals 2: Erik Bedard pitched seven solid innings, Neil Walker had three hits and Pittsburgh won for the 10th time in the past 13 games.
Reds 6, Tigers 5, 10 innings: Wilson Valdez's squeeze bunt with one out in the 10th inning scored Miguel Cairo and gave Cincinnati the win.
Cairo started the rally against left-hander Phil Coke (1-2) with his first triple of the season. One out later, Valdez pinch hit and bunted toward first baseman Prince Fielder, who threw home barehanded. Cairo slid his left hand over the plate before the tag.
Sam LeCure (2-1) pitched two innings, striking out three of the six batters he faced.
Astros 8, White Sox 3: Jed Lowrie, Brett Wallace and Brian Bogusevic homered for Houston, which got a strong effort from the bullpen.
Houston's win was just its third in the last 13 games. Chicago lost for the fourth time in 15 games.
Rays 5, Marlins 1: Matt Joyce homered, doubled and scored three times, and Tampa Bay escaped several jams to beat slumping Miami.
Braves 4, Blue Jays 3, 10 innings: Jason Heyward stole third base and scored on catcher J.P. Arencibia's throwing error in the 10th inning as Atlanta beat Toronto for its fifth straight victory.
Indians 6, Cardinals 2: Josh Tomlin scattered eight hits over seven innings, Johnny Damon hit a two-run homer and Cleveland sent St. Louis to its seventh loss in 10 games.
Angels 7, Rockies 2: Torii Hunter homered twice and drove in six runs to lead Los Angeles over Colorado.
Twins 8, Cubs 7, 10 innings: Josh Willingham's RBI single in the 10th inning lifted Minnesota to the victory.
Rangers 5, Giants 0: Craig Gentry had a career-high five hits and drove in two runs, Matt Harrison pitched his third career shutout and the Texas Rangers beat the short-handed San Francisco Giants in a rematch of the 2010 World Series.
Diamondbacks 9, Athletics 8: Ryan Roberts hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a victory over the Oakland Athletics.
National League
Brewers 9, Padres 5: Corey Hart hit two homers for the Brewers, and rookie Martin Maldonado connected for a three-run shot.
Pinch-hitter Taylor Green contributed a two-run homer as Milwaukee earned its third consecutive victory after losing three of four at the beginning of its nine-game homestand.
