Riyadh newspaper The problem of fake or imitation products in our marketplace is on the rise and shows no sign of abating. The danger from fake products is great, especially in areas such as medication or automobile parts. Fake tires for example have caused many deadly accidents. Owners of famous trademarks also suffer with huge losses. The two, five and ten riyals shops, which attract throngs of people, especially those with limited income, play an important role in the spread and use of fake or imitation products. Some people accuse China of being a major manufacturer of counterfeit products and also as being the main exporter. A Saudi economic expert stated recently that Chinese trade in Europe and the Americas was in billions of dollars. But all products sent there were of high standards because of stringent import regulations. He pointed out that our markets are flooded with fake and poor products because there are no clear rules and regulations that prevent these counterfeit products from entering our market. He called for defining high standards for all imported products, rejecting charges by some who place the full blame on Chinese factories for the importation of fake products. We need strict and vigilant monitoring to prevent counterfeit products from sneaking in our market. Government agencies are working to put an end to this problem. Businessmen should do the same and not import imitation products. In case of violation, the offenders must be severely dealt with. __
