TEACHER TALK
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 19 - 04 - 2012

A true teacher is a learner Atifa Manzoor Hashmi
Kinder garden
Mehad ilmi Ar Rabiya (Islamic Institute)
I started my teaching career from a small private school and by giving tuitions at home. It boosted my confidence and gave me enough experience to work at a higher level. I got motivated by looking at my family, my sisters, cousins who worked in this noble profession. From there I learned to earn for my family.
Without an activity a brain is rusted and fails to be innovative. Teaching is a way to continue your education as we learn each day from our students, confronting obstacles exploring to come up with solutions to overcome them.
Yes, strictness works with a student for a while, but it will fail to create an imaginative mind. Love is the only language that a child can understand, it makes him courageous to convey his original ideas. Hitting a kid will only hurt the child and his future that would be full of insecurities.
Not being at home doesn't mean you change your priorities. Home and family comes first no matter how long you've be working in a field. I've been offered to take the evening classes and night tuitions, but I refused them for the sake of my mother and my family. Time should be divided properly and none of the responsibilities should be neglected.
It's been 12 years since I started teaching and I've learned an important thing that if you are honest and efficient to what you are doing you will never fail. I remember a naughty boy who kept jumping on a desk and didn't give ear to what I was saying. I left the class for five minutes and he fell from the desk injuring himself. After that incident nobody dared such an act in my class, instead, they carefully listened to every word I said.
I give my best while teaching because I don't want a child's today to get wasted. I want them to be successful individuals and always aim for the best. Every child can not afford tuitions and the exorbitant pay that goes with it, so the job must be done justly.
One should always strive to be a good teacher; work hard to build the base of students, manage priorities as we are answerable for our responsibilities and duties at home as well. Parents paying attention to their kids at home learn more quickly than others. Teachers should teach well, so that when students become teachers they don't complain about those teachers rather inspire their pupils to follow the path of knowledge and continue the cycle.
Nothing compares to the moment when a child with no knowledge of English joins your class, and at the end of a term they come talk to you in English without any apprehension. It is indeed one of the most amazing moments of life, to see your children grow in front of you.
