Ben Scrivens didn't want to be part of Steve Stamkos' big milestone. The NHL's leading scorer got his 59th goal of the season, but Dion Phaneuf scored the game-winner in overtime for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 3-2 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday. “I just didn't want to give up 60,” said Scrivens, the Leafs' goalie. “It would be on the highlights all summer.” Stamkos is trying to become the NHL's first 60-goal scorer since Washington's Alex Ovechkin had 65 in the 2007-08 season, and just the second player to reach that mark in the last 15 years. “He's a team player and he cares about the right things for the right reasons,” said coach Guy Boucher. “Whether it's 59 or 60, it doesn't make a difference in the quality of the player.” Stamkos badly wanted to get the job done in his hometown — “Oh yeah, it'd be special,” he said before the game — but heads to Winnipeg instead needing a goal in Tampa's final game Saturday. Ducks 3, Oilers 2: Ryan Getzlaf scored in overtime as the Anaheim Ducks gave Edmonton fans an unhappy final look at their team at home this season, defeating the Oilers 3-2. An Edmonton shot caromed off the boards and came all the way down the ice for a Getzlaf breakaway, and he beat Edmonton goalie Devan Dubnyk through the legs 1:12 into extra time. Andrew Cogliano and Bobby Ryan also scored for the Ducks who ended a three-game winless streak and moved up to 23rd in the NHL with one game to play this season. Sam Gagner and Jordan Eberle scored for the Oilers who sit second-last in the NHL and finished off the year a 18-17-6 on home ice this season. Capitals 4, Panthers 2: The Florida Panthers will return to the NHL playoffs for the first time in 12 years but a 4-2 loss to the Washington Capitals means their quest for a first division title will go down to the wire. Washington also claimed an Eastern Conference playoff berth after Buffalo, who lost 2-1 to Philadelphia, were eliminated from contention. In Philadelphia, Matt Read ended Buffalo's playoff hopes on a breakaway goal with 4:21 left in the third to break a 1-1 tie. Ville Leino scored the Sabres' goal in the second period before Marc-Andre Bourdon tied the score at 1-1. Also in the East, the Pittsburgh Penguins sealed the conference's number four seed with a 5-2 win over the Rangers. In the Western Conference, the Los Angeles Kings wrapped up a playoff berth when the Dallas Stars lost 2-0 to Nashville. The Pacific Division-leading Kings then lost to the San Jose Sharks 6-5 in a shootout. The Sharks gained the West's seventh playoff spot with the win, and the Phoenix Coyotes took the eighth and final berth. Colorado was eliminated from contention after a 5-2 loss to Columbus. In other action it was: NY Islanders 5, Winnipeg 4; Carolina 2, Montreal 1 (SO); Boston 3, Ottawa 1; New Jersey 2, Detriot 1; Minnesota 2, Chicago 1 (SO); Calgary 3, Vancouver 2.
