The development of unplanned districts in the region is aimed at raising the living standards of citizens and expatriates and not to make profits for government or the private sector, said Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Emir of Makkah region. Addressing a press conference here Saturday after chairing the 12th meeting of the executive committee overseeing the region's development projects, Prince Khaled said the private sector only has a 30 percent stake in the projects. The government is funding everything, including basic infrastructure in these areas, he added. In response to a question, he said development of parts of Al-Ruwais District in Jeddah “is forging ahead according to the plan” and that hurdles delaying the project have been resolved. “As for special cases involving residents of these areas in Jeddah, they will be studied by a committee chaired by Prince Misha'l Bin Majed, Governor of Jeddah.” Any challenges in Makkah will be tackled by Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Khudhairi, Undersecretary of Makkah governorate. The development projects, Prince Khaled said, are essential to improve the lives of citizens and expatriates. “We have the resources and cannot accept that there should be citizens and expatriates living below our standards.” He added that some wealthy people and businessmen have shown their interest in participating in the projects. They have submitted a number of proposals to the governorate which are being studied. Prince Khaled said Al-Ruwais, like other districts, will not be demolished as a whole, only buildings in unplanned areas will be razed. Modern buildings on main streets that do not clash with current planning, will not be demolished. These include the International Medical Center, he said. Journalists, he said, should verify all information before publishing it. He said he was ever willing to clarify any issue. “There are certain parties that want to leak false information for their personal benefit.” Prince Khaled said owners of properties in unplanned areas can participate in development projects as shareholders with the compensation they get after appropriation of their properties. A property owner can also develop his property or building at his own expense, provided it complies with the new plans. Prince Khaled also warned developers of Khuzam Development Project. “If the company delays any more, they should either withdraw or we will take back the project from them.” __
