Doctors who accept ‘gifts' from patients, medical representatives and companies in return of biased favors have been asked to stop such unethical practices. Sheikh Abdul Aziz Aal Al-Sheikh, Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, delivered a speech full of advice, medical laws and ethics to the staff of Al-Hada Armed Forces Hospital in Taif. “Some physicians write fake medical reports or fake sick leaves for patients who do not deserve them in return of gifts from patients,” the Mufti said. “Physicians are not allowed to take gifts from patients, medical representatives or medical companies.” He also condemned referrals. “They should not ask patients to go to a particular pharmacy and buy medicines from specific medical companies.” The permanent committee of senior scholars has earlier issued rulings against such practices because doctors limit to one company and ignore others. They regarded these gifts as bribes that are Haram as the Prophet (Peace be upon him) cursed the one who gives bribe and the one who takes it. He advised doctors to show good manners and treat the patients well. “Good morals and honesty with patients is essential. Patients need to be explained patiently about their diseases,” the Mufti said. “If a patient has a dangerous disease, inform him gradually and be merciful to him,” he added. “Do not shock him and tell him suddenly that he has cancer or some deadly disease.” Addressing privacy rights of patients, he asked doctors to be upright when dealing with the private parts of patients, male or female. “Expose only the required portion for medical examination. (Male) doctors should not be alone with female patients; a family member or a nurse must accompany.” The Mufti also addressed abortion issues. “Abortion is not allowed in Islam unless it is necessary, in order to save the mother's life. And this decision should be taken by the medical committee,” he said. “Cosmetic operations like hair removal, enlarging breasts, and liposuction are new trends in our society. In cases of burns, damage or congenital anomaly it is permissible to do cosmetic operations,” he said. He encouraged them to develop and advance in medical research. “We should learn and seek knowledge all the time. Be ambitious to equip yourselves with the best medical practices available,” he said. “Research and invent new ways of treatment and don't just stick to what is known.” __
